About Me
I dreamt about being a doctor as early as age 5, when my mother bought me a Fisher Price physician kit that included a stethoscope, oto-ophthalmoscope, reflex hammer, and other physical exam tools. My mom was my very first patient and I loved using the medical tools to make sure she was in good health. There is also video from kindergarten when the teacher asked me what I want to be when I grow up and without hesitation I said a doctor. Fast forward many years and now I am a physician-scientist, psychiatrist-neuroscientist fascinated by the diversity and richness of people and by our dynamic brains. This incredible organ is a conduit to our humanity, allowing us to be conscious, self aware, creative, intelligent, and empathic; to tell stories, create language, music, cuisines, culture, societies, and to dream. Our brain also produces the darker and destructive sides of our humanity. I'm fascinated by our brains particularly when thoughts and perceptions are altered and people begin to experience a variety of psychiatric symptoms that impair their ability to live the way they wish. This fascination, combined with salient personal experiences, drove me to study the brain scientifically and to pursue psychiatry. Since I am equally intrigued by the dynamic processes of development, I chose to pursue additional expertise and training in child & adolescent psychiatry, developmental neuroscience, and neurobehavioral genetics. Of course, our brains don't work or live in isolation. They are integrated with our bodies and our environments. This two way street of dynamic growth and change from the world acting on us and from us acting on the world allows for magic to happen. My family has been a key inspiration, providing me with the optimal environment and opportunities to thrive, pursue my dreams and passions, and live the life I dreamt about as a child. I am indebted to my parents and siblings for the love and support they have given me.

Board Certifications
Education
Roles & Institutions
BS, Neuroscience, UCLA
2004 - 2006
I've had the privilege of studying neuroscience at the top public university in the USA, where I learned from world leaders in neuroscience and psychology and conducted research as in the Epilepsy Research Program at the Brain Research Institute. I completed an undergraduate thesis titled, "Correlating Hippocampal Radial Atrophy with Seizure Onset Patterns in People with Epilepsy," and graduated with College Honors and Departmental Highest Honors. I received a full scholarship to support my undergraduate studies through the Gold Shield Alumni and was on the Executive Board of the Alumni Scholars Club.
MD/PhD, Medical Scientist Training Program,
University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Mellon University
2007 - 2014
This Medical Scientist Training Program is one of the top NIH-funded intergrated MD/PhD programs in the country. It was led by Clayton Wiley, MD, PhD, and Richard Steinman, MD, PhD, and provided an amazing foundation to conduct cutting edge science and learn medicine from some of the world's brightest minds. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to train at Pitt and CMU due to the strong molecular neuroscience, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and computational neuroscience programs.
PhD, Neuroscience,
University of Pittsburgh
2009-2013
My PhD mentor, David Lewis, is recognized as one of the leading experts in the world in studying GABA neurons and schizophrenia in human brains. My dissertation focused on understanding cellular and molecular underpinnings of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia and the development of prefrontal cortical neural circuitry.
MD, Medicine,
University of Pittsburgh
2007-2009, 2013-2014
Pitt Med was one of the top 15 medical schools in the USA when I attended. My education at Pitt Med allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and illness pathology and pathophysiology. I was also introduced to patient care and had exemplary role models across all disciplines of medicine to show me the way of being an empathic doctor who recognizes the immense privilege a patient grants me to help them heal themselves. I continue to draw on these skills in my current work.
